In a major step toward creating a safer digital space for teenagers, the Instagram Parental Supervision App was officially launched in Sri Lanka today. The app is designed to help parents monitor and guide the social media activity of children aged 13 to 16, according to Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne.
Sharing the announcement on his official Facebook page, Deputy Minister Weeraratne emphasized that the move follows collaborative discussions with Meta, the parent company of Instagram. These talks focused on vital concerns such as youth safety, data protection, and regulatory alignment.
“This is a key step toward creating a safer digital environment for our youth,” he said.
The app allows parents to:
Monitor their child’s screen time on Instagram
View their followers and accounts they follow
Set usage time limits
Receive activity reports
Weeraratne also noted that Meta supports Sri Lanka’s upcoming data protection framework, reinforcing its commitment to user safety and legal compliance.
Highlighting Meta’s broader global vision, the Deputy Minister mentioned the company’s USD 75 billion investment in AI infrastructure. Meta’s flagship product, Meta AI, is already serving over one million users worldwide for free.
The Instagram Parental Supervision App is now live in Sri Lanka, following its rollout in 14 other countries, as part of the government’s effort to promote digital responsibility and online safety among young users.
