Sri Lanka Heads to Historic Presidential Run-Off After Second Count

In an unprecedented turn of events, Sri Lanka is set to experience its first-ever presidential run-off. The Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, officially confirmed that the counting of second-preference votes will now commence after the initial results of the 2024 presidential election failed to produce a clear winner. This announcement came during a special media briefing earlier today.

The run-off will focus on the two leading candidates—Anura Kumara Dissanayake from the National People’s Power (NPP) and Sajith Premadasa from the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya. All other candidates will be disqualified from further participation in the election process.

This decision is a result of the highly competitive nature of this election, which has captivated the entire nation. As no candidate was able to secure a majority in the first count, the next phase of the election process will begin with the distribution of second-preference votes from the eliminated candidates.

With the country now awaiting the final results of this historic election, all eyes are on the two remaining candidates as they vie for the highest office in the land.
