As part of National Tax Week, the Sri Lanka Customs Department has launched a new ‘Vehicle Verification Portal’ that allows the public to check the legal status of imported vehicles before purchasing them.
Additional Director General of Customs Seevali Arukgoda encouraged citizens to use the tool to avoid falling victim to fraud when buying vehicles. The platform enables users to verify whether a vehicle has been legally imported, assembled locally from parts, or carries fake number plates.
To use the service, users must enter their phone number, NIC or passport number, and the vehicle’s chassis number. A confirmation SMS will be sent with the vehicle’s import status.
Vehicles imported before 2005 are not included in the system, Arukgoda clarified.
He emphasized that this initiative makes it easier for anyone to verify a vehicle’s background via mobile device, promoting greater transparency and consumer protection in the auto market.
The Vehicle Verification Portal is now live and represents a major step in improving public access to vehicle import data and enhancing accountability in vehicle transactions.
