Sri Lanka Announces Preliminary Squad for T20 World Cup: Bhanuka, Vijayakanth, and Lahiru Included

The anticipation for the T20 World Cup is already stirring excitement among cricket enthusiasts, and Sri Lanka has made a bold statement with its preliminary squad selection. Led by the National Cricket Selection Committee, chaired by Upul Tharanga, the squad of 32 players promises a thrilling combination of experience and fresh talent. Among the notable inclusions are the dynamic Bhanuka Rajapaksa, promising leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, and the seasoned all-rounder Lahiru Madushanka.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth’s selection marks a significant milestone in his career as he joins the national pool for the first time, replacing the injured Wanindu Hasaranga. Hailing from Jaffna, Viyaskanth’s recent stint with the Sunrise Hyderabad team has undoubtedly bolstered his credentials. On the other hand, Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s return to the squad signals a resurgence after being sidelined due to injuries. The former Royal and current BRC batter adds depth to the team’s batting lineup with his aggressive style of play.

Meanwhile, Lahiru Madushanka’s recall to the squad comes after a missed opportunity in the previous T20 World Cup in England due to injury. His all-round abilities bring balance to the team and provide crucial options for the selectors.

The selection committee’s strategy is clear – to harness the talent within the domestic circuit through T20 tournaments. By pitting T20 teams against each other, they aim to unearth hidden gems and refine their squad ahead of the prestigious World Cup event. With the next LPL tournament scheduled for July, the T20 domestic tournament becomes the primary platform for scouting talents for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, scheduled from June 2 to 29.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s return to the national team after recovering from a heel injury adds further depth to the squad. His stint in Dubai for additional treatment underscores the team’s commitment to player fitness and performance optimization.

Additionally, the influx of Sri Lankan players from the Indian Premier League adds further firepower to the squad. Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara, Dushmantha Chameera, and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth are expected to bolster the team’s ranks, providing invaluable experience from their IPL endeavors.

The leadership mantle sees Charith Asalanka stepping in as the deputy skipper, supported by the likes of Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kamindu Mendis. The coaching setup, featuring Anusha Samaranayake and Aqib Javed, adds valuable expertise to the squad’s preparation.

As the squad undergoes further scrutiny and trimming down to the final 15, the seasoned trio of Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and Kusal Janith Perera stand out alongside emerging talents like Chamika Karunaratne, Promod Madushan, and the spin duo of Akila Dhananjaya and Jeffrey Vandersay.

In summary, Sri Lanka’s preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup exudes a blend of experience, talent, and depth across all departments. With a meticulous selection process and rigorous training ahead, the team aims to make a formidable impact on the global stage come June.
