If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Here’s a story of the misunderstanding that took the automotive media world by storm this week.
By now you may have seen several reports in the media suggesting the Subaru WRX Sportswagon will finally be offered with a manual transmission – but unfortunately, it appears to be little more than a misunderstanding.
While Australia has been lucky enough to have the WRX Sportswagon since February 2022, Subaru just recently announced the model would go on sale in Mexico – with the family performance car now available there for pre-order.
However, a number of automotive media outlets have begun reporting the WRX Sportswagon will be available as a manual – which would be a first for any market, given this generation is only sold with a CVT automatic elsewhere.
And while we take no enjoyment from bursting bubbles, we’re sorry to report that, no, Subaru hasn’t made any announcements regarding a manual WRX Sportswagon.
The confusion appears to have sprouted from the pre-order page on Subaru Mexico’s website, which shows the price list of the entire WRX line-up – despite exclusively showing images of the wagon.
The line-up consists of the range-topping WRX tS CVT (sedan) for 919,900 Mexican Pesos ($AU82,570), the new WRX Sportwagon CVT for 899,900 Pesos ($AU80,780), and the entry-level manual WRX High 6MT (sedan) for 819,900 Pesos ($AU73,590).
Rather than there being three different grades of the WRX Sportwagon in Mexico, there is only one WRX wagon, sold alongside the manual and automatic versions of the WRX sedan.
Furthermore, it has been reported that Mexican media who attended the launch event were told by Subaru representatives the WRX Sportwagon would only be available with an automatic.
“While there are no immediate plans for a manual-transmission WRX Sportswagon to come to Australia, we are always keeping our eye out for what is available for our market,” a spokesperson for Subaru Australia told Drive.
Curiously, Subaru appears to have dropped the second ‘s’ from the Sportswagon name, as it’s known in Australia, and has opted to instead call it the Sportwagon in Mexico – the same name initially given to the Holden VE Commodore wagon in 2008.
