Sony and Honda Unveil Afeela Prototype SUV at CES Las Vegas

Sony and Honda have once again captured attention at CES in Las Vegas, unveiling a new Afeela prototype SUV alongside the latest version of the Afeela 1 electric sedan. The announcement comes three years after the original Afeela concept made its debut at the world’s largest technology expo.

While Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) confirmed that deliveries of the Afeela 1 electric sedan will begin in California in late 2026, followed by Arizona in 2027, the spotlight this year shifted to an unnamed SUV prototype. The new SUV is expected to enter the market in 2028, initially targeting customers in the United States, with production planned at Honda’s advanced manufacturing facility in Ohio.

A Vision for the Future of Electric Mobility

The newly revealed SUV is currently a design study, with no official technical specifications released. However, it is expected to share much of its technology with the Afeela 1 sedan. The electric sedan features a 91kWh battery, offering an estimated 480 km driving range, along with dual 241-horsepower motors, all-wheel drive, air suspension, and a native NACS charging port, allowing access to Tesla Superchargers.

Despite its sleek, coupe-inspired design, the Afeela SUV promises more interior space, easier access, and greater versatility, aiming to appeal to a broader customer base than the sedan.

AI-Powered Driving and Entertainment Experience

Sony Honda Mobility envisions both the sedan and SUV as more than just vehicles. The brand describes them as AI-powered “creative entertainment spaces.” Initially, the SUV will support Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving, with future plans to advance toward Level 4 autonomy, allowing occupants to relax while the vehicle handles most driving tasks—though steering wheels and pedals will remain.

A key highlight is the Afeela Personal Agent, an interactive conversational AI powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, designed to offer personalized, natural dialogue tailored to each user.

Co-Creation and In-Car Innovation

Through the Afeela Co-Creation Program, SHM is working closely with creators and developers to expand in-vehicle entertainment options. This includes access to tools for designing custom in-car themes, apps, and Android-based infotainment experiences, supported by cloud APIs and a dedicated development environment.

Pricing Outlook

While pricing details for the SUV have not yet been announced, the Afeela 1 sedan provides a reference point. The sedan is offered in two trims: Origin, starting at $89,900, and Signature, starting at $102,900. Currently, there are no plans to launch Afeela vehicles in Canada.

With its blend of electric performance, AI-driven features, and immersive digital experiences, Sony and Honda’s Afeela lineup signals a bold step toward the future of mobility.
