SLFP Marks 74 Years of Political Legacy

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) celebrates its 74th anniversary today (September 2), marking over seven decades of shaping the nation’s political landscape.

Founded in 1951 by S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, the SLFP was built on the principles of the Pancha Maha Balawegaya * the five great forces of society: monks, physicians, teachers, farmers, and labourers. The party has since played a pivotal role in Sri Lankan politics, producing several heads of state and influencing national policy across generations.

This year’s commemoration is scheduled to take place at 2:00 PM at the SLFP Headquarters. The event will be presided over by Party Chairman, Attorney-at-Law Nimal Siripala de Silva, and will also feature the participation of leaders from allied political parties.

Party electoral organisers, local government representatives, and officials from affiliated organisations are expected to join the celebrations, which will reflect on the SLFP’s historical journey and its vision for the future.

As the SLFP turns 74, the anniversary serves as both a moment of reflection on its enduring legacy and an opportunity to chart its course in the evolving political landscape of Sri Lanka.
