Sheikh Hamdan Approves Dh500 Million Master Plan to Transform Umm Suqeim Beach

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has approved a Dh500 million master plan to redevelop Umm Suqeim Beach, transforming it into an iconic waterfront destination that blends global appeal with a strong Emirati identity.

The project is one of Dubai Municipality’s flagship initiatives under its comprehensive programme to upgrade public beaches across the emirate, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a leading global tourism destination.

Announcing the approval, Sheikh Hamdan said the project reflects Dubai’s commitment to world-class urban design, innovation, and sustainability, while keeping quality of life for residents and visitors as a top priority. He added that developing public spaces and waterfronts is part of an integrated vision to make Dubai the best city in the world to live, work, and visit.

Aligned with Dubai’s Long-Term Vision

The Umm Suqeim Beach redevelopment aligns with the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, which focuses on healthy lifestyles, community wellbeing, and enriched public spaces. It also supports the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aimed at optimising coastal land use and building sustainable infrastructure for future growth.

Project Scope and Features

The project will span 3.1 kilometres, covering approximately 445,000 square metres, with a 30% increase in beach area and developable spaces. To support evening activities and night swimming, smart lighting will illuminate 130,000 square metres of the beachfront.

The master plan is based on detailed social, environmental, and traffic studies, along with community engagement, ensuring a balance between tourism development, environmental preservation, and the privacy of nearby residential areas.

Facilities for 6 Million Visitors a Year

Once completed, the redeveloped beach will be able to accommodate up to 6 million visitors annually. Key upgrades include:

A 200% increase in parking capacity to around 2,400 spaces

Improved road access from Jumeirah Street

Separation of traffic from surrounding residential neighbourhoods

Six architecturally distinctive gateways reflecting local identity

Ten mobility hubs and eleven taxi pick-up and drop-off points

Dedicated facilities for bicycles and electric scooters

A 38-metre observation tower, inspired by Dubai’s maritime heritage, will serve as a landmark feature enhancing the beach’s visual identity.

Focus on Sustainability and Innovation

Sustainability and climate resilience are central to the project. Measures include a two-kilometre retaining wall, elevated beach levels to address rising sea levels, and an AI-powered smart facilities management system to improve operational efficiency.

Dubai Municipality also aims to attract investors and private sector partners through the project, strengthening public-private partnerships and supporting the emirate’s tourism economy. The master plan reflects Dubai’s ambition to transform its beaches into globally recognised urban and tourism landmarks.
