Shane Watson believes that Steve Smith is still capable of being a successful Test opener.

Former Australian Test opener Shane Watson has weighed in on the debate surrounding Steve Smith’s batting position, urging the Australian team to stick with the veteran batsman at the top of the order.

According to Watson, Smith has the skill to succeed as an opener and should not be lured back to his preferred position at No.4, which he believes would be a “safety blanket” for the 34-year-old. Watson, who himself moved from the middle order to open, credits Smith’s ability to adapt and believes that a few technique tweaks would be enough to ensure his success at the top of the order.

Watson’s comments come as Cameron Green’s fitness status remains uncertain, with some reports suggesting the all-rounder may miss the opening Test against India in Perth. The uncertainty surrounding Green’s availability has cast doubt over Australia’s batting plans, with some considering a move for Smith back to No.4.

However, Watson remains convinced that Smith has the ability to excel as an opener, pointing to his century in New Zealand as evidence of his potential at the top of the order. He believes that Green, who also batted at No.4 in that match, is the “perfect No.4 candidate” for the future, but thinks that Smith should be given the opportunity to succeed at the top of the order.

“With the right adjustments to his technique, I believe Steve Smith can be an incredibly successful opener,” Watson said. “He’s got the skill, he’s got the experience, and he’s got the temperament to succeed. I think it would be a mistake to move him back to No.4, where he would be playing it safe and relying on his previous success rather than trying to adapt to a new challenge.”

Watson’s comments are likely to add to the debate surrounding Smith’s batting position, as the Australian team prepares to face off against India in a highly anticipated Test series. While some may agree with Watson’s assessment, others may argue that Smith’s experience and success at No.4 make him a better option for the team. One thing is certain, however: the debate surrounding Smith’s batting position is set to continue, with Watson’s views providing a fresh perspective on the issue.
