Gonakumbura Pangukarage Shalani Tharaka Wijayabandara born 15 November 1990, popularly known as Shalani Tharaka, is a renowned Sri Lankan actress and model. As one of the most celebrated television actresses in Sri Lanka, Tharaka has made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. She gained widespread recognition after winning the Sirasa Kumariya beauty pageant in 2007. Beyond acting, she is also a talented dancer, lyricist, and author.

Early Life

Tharaka was born on 15 November 1990 in Balangoda, Sri Lanka. Her father, Susantha Wijayabandara, and her mother, Suraji Fernando, who is a professional beautician, have been integral influences in her life. She began her education at St. Agnes Convent in Balangoda. Later, she moved to Negombo, her mother’s hometown, where she continued her education at Newstead Girls College. It was here that she honed her skills in both Western and Kandyan dance styles.

Career

In 2007, at the age of seventeen, Tharaka’s life took a dramatic turn when she won the Sirasa Kumariya beauty pageant, organized by Sirasa TV. This victory catapulted her into the spotlight and opened doors to numerous opportunities in the entertainment industry. Her acting debut came with the television serial “Poojasanaya,” directed by Sherly P. Delankawala, where she starred alongside Suraj Mapa.

Following her debut, Tharaka’s career flourished as she appeared in a variety of popular television serials across different genres. Notable among these are “Isuru Bawana,” “Hansi,” “Giridevi,” “Api Api Wage” (I & II), “Ganga Addara,” and “Sanda Sanda Wage.” Her versatile acting skills and captivating performances endeared her to a broad audience.

Tharaka’s talents extend beyond teledramas. She has been featured in several TV commercials, including those for Hero Honda, Raino, and Janet. Additionally, she has appeared in music videos such as “Oya Dese” by Prinyan, “Mata Oya” by D n S, and “Wasthuwe” by Shafee ft. Delon.

In 2012, Tharaka ventured into the film industry with her debut in the movie “Selvam,” where she portrayed the character Medhavi. She continued to demonstrate her acting prowess with a lead role in the horror film “Spandana.” Tharaka also showcased her dancing abilities by participating in the second season of “Sirasa Dancing Stars” and “Hiru Super Dancer.”

Tharaka’s excellence in acting has been recognized with several awards. On 19 September 2020, she made history at the 16th Raigam Tele’es ceremony by winning both the Best Teledrama Actress and Most Popular Teledrama Actress awards, marking the first time in 24 years that one actress secured both accolades simultaneously.

In 2021, Tharaka was featured in the Raffealla Fernando Celebrity Calendar, alongside many other prominent Sri Lankan celebrities. This inclusion is considered one of the highest civilian honors awarded to an individual in Sri Lanka, further cementing her status as a significant figure in the entertainment industry.
