Seven Iranians sentenced for life in heroin smuggle case

The Colombo High Court has sentenced seven Iranian nationals to life imprisonment for their involvement in smuggling over 420 kilograms of heroin in the Mattakkuliya coastal area. The verdict was delivered yesterday by High Court Judge R.S.S. Sapuvida.

The case, which has drawn significant public attention, involved a major drug smuggling operation intercepted on July 12, 2019. The Attorney General’s Department filed an indictment against nine Iranians, accusing them of trafficking a staggering 425.35 kilograms of heroin. During the trial, two of the accused passed away, leaving seven to face the full extent of the law.

During the hearing, the defence counsel informed the court that the accused intended to plead guilty to the charges. Upon reviewing their plea, Judge Sapuvida sentenced all seven defendants to life imprisonment. The judgment was read aloud in open court by Mudliyar Nilushika Thennakoon.

This case underscores Sri Lanka’s continued commitment to combating international drug trafficking. The interception of such a substantial quantity of heroin highlights the efforts of law enforcement and judicial authorities in addressing the nation’s drug problem.

The Colombo High Court’s verdict sends a strong message to those engaged in the illicit drug trade that such crimes will not go unpunished. Authorities reaffirm their commitment to maintaining vigilance in coastal areas and strengthening international cooperation to prevent narcotics smuggling.
