Manchester United have confirmed that Sergio Reguilon has returned to Tottenham Hotspur after seeing his loan spell cut short.
The Athletic reported that Reguilon would return to Tottenham after United activated a break clause in the loan agreement.
United said in a statement that “with fewer games in the second half of the season and injured players returning, there will be less opportunity for Sergio to play”.
The 27-year-old Spaniard, who arrived at United in September due to injuries to primary left-back Luke Shaw and regular back-up Tyrell Malacia, featured in 12 appearances across all competitions.
With Shaw’s return to fitness, Malacia approaching recovery and a reduced fixture load after exits from the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the decision was made for Reguilon to return to his parent club.
After initially targeting Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, United shifted their focus to Reguilon. However, Cucurella’s involvement in the Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon before the summer window closure created complications, ultimately leading United to secure a deal for Reguilon.
United, meanwhile, have been busy working on deals for some of their current players, with The Athletic reporting on Wednesday that they had activated the option to extend Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s contract to 2025.
The right-back, 26, was on track for the expiration of his contract at the close of the 2023-24 season. However, United has exercised the option to extend it for an additional 12 months.
United also opted to extend Victor Lindelof’s deal until 2025 in December, while they took care of their more pressing contract situations towards the end of 2022-23 and over the summer with Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford signing long-term deals.
Erik ten Hag’s side are next in action on January 8 in an FA Cup third round tie at Wigan Athletic.
