Scorching Alert Odisha Braces for Severe Heatwave, Bhubaneshwar Hits Record High

As temperatures soar in Odisha, Bhubaneshwar registers a blistering 43.6 degrees Celsius, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a severe heatwave alert for the state.

Odisha finds itself in the grip of an intense heatwave as Bhubaneshwar, the state capital, sizzles at a scorching 43.6 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperature of the season. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm, forecasting severe heatwave conditions across the region.

In a recent announcement, the IMD cautioned of severe heatwave conditions prevailing in isolated pockets of Odisha from April 18-19, with heatwave conditions expected to persist on April 20-21, 2024. Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, revealed that 27 cities in the state are witnessing temperatures soaring above 41 degrees Celsius.

The situation in Bhubaneshwar, Boudh, and Angul is particularly concerning, with temperatures breaching the 43-degree mark. Mohanty highlighted the likelihood of hot and humid conditions along the coastal areas, with warm nights exacerbating the discomfort.

Relief appears on the horizon post-April 21, as the weather department anticipates rain, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds to offer respite from the sweltering heat. However, regions like Mayurbhanj, Angul, Nayagarh, Balangir, and Kalahandi are expected to experience maximum temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius.

To mitigate the impact of the heatwave, authorities have issued a Yellow alert for several districts including Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapara, and Cuttack, among others. The Odisha government has taken proactive measures, announcing the closure of all schools in the state from April 18 to 20.

A Yellow alert advises the public to remain vigilant, signaling moderate health concerns for vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Despite the discomfort, the alert indicates that the heat is tolerable for the general population.

As Odisha braces itself for the relentless heatwave, citizens are urged to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun to safeguard their health and well-being.
