Salt Lake City Church Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 6 Hurt

Two people lost their lives and six others were injured in a shooting that took place outside a Salt Lake City church hosting a memorial service on Wednesday night, police reported.

Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Glen Mills said three of the injured victims were in critical condition. The conditions of the remaining three were not immediately available, as they were taken to hospitals in private vehicles. All eight victims were adults.

The incident happened outside the Rose Park 5th Ward meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 660 N. Redwood Road, which is also used by the Riverside 2nd Ward. According to Police Chief Brian Redd, the shooter or shooters fled north on Redwood Road after the attack. He added that investigators do not believe the incident was specifically aimed at the faith community, nor do they think it was a random act.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and examining data from license plate readers on Redwood Road and 700 North. Several individuals were detained for questioning, but no suspects had been officially identified as of Wednesday night.
“We are following every lead,” Chief Redd said. “Our officers are working tirelessly, and we will continue until those responsible are brought to justice.”

Redwood Road remained closed near the church as investigators continued their work, with authorities urging the public to avoid the area.
