Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Harin Fernando has taken a notable step to support Sri Lankan athletes by awarding financial sponsorships and prize money totaling Rs. 134 million. Six athletes heading to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games received cheques of Rs. 1 million each. Additionally, athletes and coaches who secured medals and top-eight positions in the recent Asian and Paralympic Games in Hangzhou, China, were rewarded with Rs. 1280 lakh in prize money.
Among the recipients, young sprinter Tharushi stood out, receiving Rs. 15 million for her gold medal at the Asian Games and an additional Rs. 2.5 million for her relay medal. This significant financial boost is aimed at encouraging and motivating athletes to continue their pursuit of excellence.
Minister Fernando highlighted the importance of supporting athletes despite the country’s financial challenges.
