‘Repugnant’: Jetstar passenger removed from flight after he alleged vaped, exposed himself and urinated

A man was removed from a Jetstar plane on the Gold Coast after he vaped, exposed himself and then urinated on the seats, police have alleged.

The incident happened on Monday night and saw the 52-year-old ejected from the Melbourne bound flight before it even took off.

Australian Federal Police said in a statement that the man was seen smoking an e-cigarette in his seat as the plane was taxing.

“When instructed by cabin crew to stop, became argumentative and attempted to enter the toilet,” the AFP stated.

“Surrounding passengers then witnessed the man lower his shorts before urinating on the vacant seats behind him.”

The jet, which was preparing to take off, returned to the terminal building to disembark the passenger.

“I am appalled by the disgraceful behaviour exhibited on this aircraft,” Gold Coast Airport commander superintendent Josh Kinghorn said.

“AFP has zero tolerance for bad behaviour at airports and this case is an example of how one person’s abhorrent actions have a direct impact on those around them.

“Smoking a vape and urinating on a seat is not only repugnant but also poses a severe risk to the safety and comfort of passengers.

“Such despicable actions will never be tolerated, and we will ensure appropriate measures are taken to hold the individual accountable for the appalling conduct.”

The man was charged with offensive or disorderly behaviour on an aircraft, failing to comply with cabin crew safety instructions and smoking on an aircraft.

The maximum penalty for each offence is a maximum of $13,750.

He will face Southport Magistrates Court on February 5, 2024.

In October, a Jetstar flight from Sydney also turned back to the gate after a row over a bad back escalated to shouting about the war in Israel and Palestine.

Flight JQ501 was about to take off from Sydney bound for Melbourne early on Tuesday when a man started complaining about back pain and demanded to leave the plane.

This created a “domino effect” where other passengers also demanded to get off, with some crying out “there’s a war in Palestine”.

“We were all quite confused,” Sharee, a passenger on-board the flight, told radio station 3AW.

“For the rest of us, because they were talking about the war in Palestine, it made us all very nervous.

The rest of the spooked passengers were unsure about their own safety, so the flight crew decided to allow everyone off the plane.

“Obviously, it’s unusual for the crew to allow passengers to leave a plane once you’ve all boarded,” Sharee said.

“The crew actually handled it quite well.”

After temporarily allowing everyone off the plane, a new crew was called for and the flight was due to leave for Melbourne at 8.45am.

Jetstar offered passengers the option to get a refund on their flight or to change to a different flight.
