Remanded MP Rambukwella Refuses Parliament Attendance Amid Controversy

Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Keheliya Rambukwella, currently under remand custody, has declined to participate in the opening session of the Fifth Session of the Ninth Parliament, scheduled for February 7th.

Despite receiving permission from Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana to attend the session upon request, Rambukwella opted not to participate, as confirmed by Prison Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake. Parliament has been duly informed of his decision.

Rambukwella’s remand stems from his involvement in the controversial human immunoglobulin procurement scandal during his tenure as Health Minister. Arrested on February 2nd, 2024, he faces charges of conspiracy and aiding in the improper procurement process.

Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama outlined the accusations against Rambukwella, emphasizing ministerial responsibility and accountability in ensuring the safety of medicines provided to the public.

The prosecution alleges irregularities in the procurement process, citing the absence of essential documents and suspicious financial transactions. Rambukwella’s lawyer argued for bail, citing health concerns and the common occurrence of issues with authorized medicines.

The magistrate ordered a comprehensive investigation into the missing documents and potential health risks associated with the procured medicine, underscoring the gravity of the case.
