Railway Strike Withdrawn, Trains Back on Track Today

Railway services returned to normal after train drivers decided to withdraw the strike action that began at midnight yesterday, following assurances from the government.

The industrial action was initiated in response to concerns over a government decision to include members of the security forces in locomotive driver training, alongside candidates already selected through the established competitive examination process. Trade unions representing train drivers argued that the move could undermine professional recruitment standards and existing career pathways within the railway sector.

The midnight strike was jointly organized by the Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union and the Locomotive Officers’ Association, leading to fears of widespread disruption to rail services across the country.

However, the situation was resolved after a late-night media briefing conducted by Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways. During the press conference, the Deputy Minister confirmed that the government had decided to temporarily suspend its plan to provide locomotive driver training to 20 personnel from the Sri Lanka Army.

Following this announcement, trade union leaders expressed satisfaction with the government’s response and agreed to immediately call off the strike. Train drivers subsequently resumed duties, ensuring that railway operations would continue without further interruption.

Authorities have emphasized that discussions will continue with relevant stakeholders to address workforce concerns while maintaining the safety, professionalism, and efficiency of the national railway service.
