Queensland Labor pledges to establish a state-owned power provider if they are elected.

Queensland Labor’s proposal to create a publicly owned energy retailer and state-owned petrol stations if re-elected is a significant step towards enhancing competition in the energy market. By introducing a new publicly-owned energy provider, the state government aims to increase competition with existing players, such as Ergon Energy in northern Queensland. This increased competition is expected to drive down energy prices for households and ensure that benefits are shared among residents rather than foreign shareholders.

The initiative is part of a broader plan by the Queensland Labor government to reduce energy costs for households and businesses. By creating a publicly-owned energy retailer, the state government hopes to reduce the reliance on foreign-owned companies and ensure that profits are reinvested in the local community rather than being sent offshore.

The proposal is also expected to improve the energy security of Queensland, by increasing the diversity of energy supply and reducing the state’s dependence on a small number of large players. This is particularly important for regions such as northern Queensland, where poor energy infrastructure and limited competition can make it difficult for households and businesses to access affordable and reliable energy.

However, the proposal has also raised concerns about the potential impact on the existing energy market and the potential for state-owned enterprises to become inefficient and wasteful. Some argue that the private sector is better equipped to deliver energy services efficiently and effectively, and that state-owned enterprises can be plagued by bureaucracy and corruption.

It remains to be seen whether the Queensland Labor government’s proposal will be successful in achieving its goals and improving the energy sector in the state. However, the plan’s focus on increasing competition, reducing energy costs, and promoting energy security is likely to be popular with many Queenslanders.
