Queensland Faces Severe Weather Warnings Amid Flooding

Urgent warnings have been issued as heavy rainfall triggers dangerous flash flooding across parts of Queensland, with Brisbane recording 85mm of rainfall in just two hours early Friday morning.

Severe weather conditions have prompted urgent warnings in Queensland as heavy downpours overnight led to dangerous flash flooding along the east coast. Brisbane was hit hard, receiving 85mm of rainfall within a mere two hours at 2:45 am on Friday. The deluge is expected to persist throughout the day. Green Hills on The Central Coast and Towong both recorded substantial rainfall, with 90mm and 88mm respectively within a two-hour span, contributing to a total of 137mm in some areas overnight. Flash flooding has already impacted Kedron Brook Creek in Brisbane’s northern suburbs, causing road closures and disruptions.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for multiple areas, including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Ipswich, cautioning of heavy rainfall that may exacerbate flash flooding. Senior Meteorologist Dean Narramore warned of widespread heavy rainfall and reiterated the risk of flash and riverine flooding, particularly in areas previously affected. Additionally, a tropical low in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria is anticipated to intensify, potentially developing into a tropical cyclone on Friday.

Sydney has also experienced significant rainfall, with up to 60mm overnight, with wet weather forecasted to persist throughout the day. Meanwhile, Western Australia contends with record-breaking February temperatures, with Perth experiencing five consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 40C. Despite a temporary reprieve, temperatures are expected to rise again over the weekend.
