Qantas Faces Multi-Million Dollar Compensation Bill for Unlawful Dismissals

On October 21, 2024, Qantas was ordered by the Federal Court to pay $170,000 in compensation to three workers who were unlawfully dismissed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This follows a High Court ruling last year that found the airline had violated the law by laying off 1,700 ground crew members in August 2020.

In a decision made in Sydney, Judge Michael Lee ruled that the three workers be compensated with payments of $30,000, $40,000, and $100,000, respectively.

Lawyers for Qantas and the Transport Workers Union are currently working to determine the final compensation for the 1,700 laid-off crew members. The airline is expected to face tens of millions of dollars in damages based on this ruling.

This case marks a critical development in corporate accountability and workers’ rights, as companies face legal consequences for unlawful employment practices during the global pandemic.
