Pubs in England and Wales will extend their hours to stay open until 01:00 BST on Thursday, 8 May, to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The government has confirmed this special extension to help people come together and celebrate the monumental day.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed that the extended hours will allow people to join in the celebrations and raise a glass to the men and women who served their country during World War II. Similar extensions have been implemented on previous VE Day anniversaries and for major events such as royal celebrations and the Euro 2024 final.
VE Day, celebrated annually on 8 May, marks Nazi Germany’s surrender to Allied forces, bringing an end to the war in Europe. This year, commemorations will begin on the Early May Bank Holiday, with a military procession and an RAF flypast over London. On 8 May, a service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey will be followed by a live concert at Horse Guards Parade.
The hospitality industry has welcomed the news, with many seeing it as a boost for the sector, especially in these challenging times. Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, emphasized that the extended hours will provide a much-needed lift for businesses while paying tribute to shared history.
