Sri Lankan pop sensation Yohani de Silva faced a protest during her performance in London on Friday (21).
A small group of activists of the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora staged a demonstration outside the concert venue, voicing their opposition due to allegations of war crimes against her father, Major General Prasanna de Silva.
The protest was organized by the Tamil Youth Organisation UK, who raised concerns about the accusations of war crimes against Major General Prasanna de Silva during Sri Lanka’s civil war.
The demonstrators gathered outside the concert hall, expressing their dissent as Yohani took the stage for her highly anticipated musical event.
“Prassana De Silva is a war criminal who is guilty of genocide and should be on trial at the ICC. Anyone who praises him is trying to whitewash his crimes,” S. Yogalingam, a co-ordinator at the Movement for Self-Determination of Tamil Eelam (MSDTE) told Tamil Guardian.
“An advocate of genocide and cheerleader of genocide perpetrators, should not be allowed to perform anywhere, let alone in London,” a Political Coordinator of the Tamil Youth Organisation UK said, adding that “It is extremely inhuman.e and inflammatory.”
Yohani, who has become a global sensation, found herself at the center of the controversy due to her father’s alleged involvement in the country’s civil war.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions within the Sri Lankan diaspora regarding the civil war and its aftermath.
Despite the protest, Yohani proceeded with her performance, continuing to captivate her international fanbase.
