Project Rambo: Aston Martin’s plans for a tough off-road SUV – report

[ad_1]

Rumours out of Aston Martin suggest the British marque is currently working on a secret off-road SUV project, taking inspiration from the iconic Lamborghini LM002.

A new unconfirmed report claims Aston Martin is currently working behind-the-scenes on a new rugged off-road SUV with supercar performance.

UK site Autocar says Aston Martin plans to build a high-powered four-wheel-drive vehicle, taking inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, Land Rover Defender, and Lamborghini LM002 – the boxy off-roader launched in 1986 and powered by a 5.2-litre V12 from the Lamborghini Countach.

While the LM002 is often known by its nickname, the ‘Rambo Lambo’ – a reference to the violent action film series starring Sylvester Stallone – the report claims the Aston Martin is known internally as ‘Project Rambo’.

The unnamed Aston Martin source claims the British supercar maker has yet to make a final decision on the vehicle and is currently evaluating design proposals – however, it’s likely it would share a platform with the DBX, but with added off-road capability.

The off-road SUV would be Aston Martin’s second after the DBX, which has quickly become the brand’s best-selling model.

The DBX is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 520kW and 900Nm, powering all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

However, there is a chance the company could fit its 614kW/1000Nm V12 engine under the bonnet – announcing earlier this year it was committed to the V12 engine for the foreseeable future.

Rugged off-road SUVs have been enjoying a renaissance in recent years, with new versions of the Defender and G-Wagen, while the latest Toyota LandCruiser Prado has also moved to a squarer exterior design.

No doubt Aston Martin has also noticed the warm reception of recent exotic off-road flavoured models like the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato.

The trend has also extended to Chinese car makers, with the likes of the YangWang U8, the Dongfeng Mengshi M-Terrain, the Fang Cheng Bao 5, and the GWM Tank 700 – many of which combine luxury interiors with off-road features and military-style looks.
