Priyanka Gandhi Unlikely to Contest Lok Sabha Elections, Focuses on Campaigning: Sources

Amidst speculation, sources reveal that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is unlikely to contest the Lok Sabha elections, opting instead to focus on campaigning for the Congress party. The decision comes as the party deliberates over the candidature of Rahul Gandhi for the prestigious Amethi or Raebareli seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is unlikely to contest the Lok Sabha elections, sources told India Today TV, amid the ongoing suspense over the party’s picks for the high-profile Amethi and Raebareli Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The sources also said that Priyanka Gandhi would only campaign for the elections and a final decision on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi contesting from Amethi or Raebareli will be taken in 24 hours.

The development comes a day after sources told India Today TV that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was suggested at the party’s Central Election Committee meeting to make the Gandhi siblings the candidates Amethi and Raebareli.

At the meeting, Congress leaders, including the general secretary-in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, strongly pitched for Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi as the party’s candidates, they added.

Both Amethi and Raebareli will go to the polls on May 20.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Union Minister Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, a Congress bastion which he had represented from 2004 to 2014.

Rahul Gandhi is seeking a second term from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala this year, which went to the polls on April 26.

Meanwhile, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi vacated the Raebareli seat she had represented since 2004 earlier this month due to her shift to the Rajya Sabha.

The Amethi-Raebareli suspense was brought up at a press conference on April 27, where Kharge was asked about the BJP criticising Rahul Gandhi for fighting the elections from Wayanad instead of Amethi.

In response, the Congress president said, “Those questioning Congress leaders for changing constituencies must also tell me how many times have (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee and (Lal Krishna) Advani changed their seats.”
