President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today inaugurated the resumption of construction on the Kadawatha to Mirigama section of the Central Expressway Project.
The recommencement ceremony, held at the Kadawatha Interchange, also marked the start of work on the interchange itself and the first 500 meters of the expressway.
The government has allocated Rs. 8.6 billion for this section of the project, which spans 37 kilometers. Construction had been suspended since mid-2022 after credit facilities were withdrawn during the economic crisis.
The Export-Import Bank of China has now approved a Yuan-denominated loan equivalent to USD 500 million, paving the way for work to restart.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-2028, further boosting Sri Lanka’s transport infrastructure and connectivity.
