Power Integrations announces a new Switcher IC family with multiple and independently regulated outputs

Power Integrations announces a new Switcher IC family with multiple and independently regulated outputs.

The InnoMux™-2 series of single-stage, individually regulated multi-output offline power-supply integrated circuits (ICs) was recently introduced by Power Integrations. The InnoMux-2 integrated circuits (ICs) combine AC-DC and downstream DC-DC conversion stages into a single chip. This allows for the generation of up to three outputs that may be regulated independently. This Switcher IC family is suitable for many applications such as white goods, industrial systems, displays, and other scenarios that require multiple voltages.

The removal of distinct DC-DC stages results in a reduction in the number of components, a decrease in the footprint of the printed circuit board (PCB), and an enhancement in efficiency by up to 10 percentage points as compared to conventional two-stage systems. The efficiency of the integrated circuits (ICs) is enhanced by the utilization of 750 V PowiGaN™ gallium-nitride transistors, zero-voltage switching (without the need for an active clamp), and synchronous rectification.

Power Integrations states that contemporary electronic systems heavily depend on several internal voltages to facilitate diverse operations, including computation, communication, and actuation tasks. These functions often involve the generation of heat, light, sound, or motion. However, the losses incurred during each conversion stage are cumulative, resulting in a decline in system performance and the generation of heat. The InnoMux-2 integrated circuit (IC) addresses this difficulty by offering a maximum of three voltage outputs that can be regulated individually, or two voltage outputs and a constant current output from a single stage. This allows for the creation of a compact and efficient power sub-system with a minimal number of components.

The InnoMux-2 integrated circuits (ICs) provide a maximum output power of 90 watts, demonstrating precise regulation of over ±3 percent across various situations including the entire input line, load, temperature, and differential current step settings. The overall efficiency of the power system, namely in the AC to regulated low-voltage DC segment, exceeds 90 percent. Additionally, the innovative InnoMux-2 controller effectively handles the delivery of power during light-load conditions, eliminating the requirement for pre-load resistors and minimizing no-load consumption to below 30 mW. Power conservation is a crucial aspect in applications that are subject to the European energy-using product (EuP) standards, which stipulate a 300 mW allowance for standby usage.

Common uses encompass televisions, displays, devices, interconnections, residential and commercial automation, LED emergency lighting, and industrial power sources.
