The Colombo High Court has issued an official arrest warrant for former Minister Wimal Weerawansa after he failed to appear in court in relation to a case filed by the Bribery Commission.
The legal proceedings involve allegations that Weerawansa illegally acquired assets exceeding Rs. 75 million, prompting the ongoing investigation. According to reporters from Ada Derana, the warrant was authorized by Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihal, who instructed that the former minister be taken into custody and produced before the court without delay.
In addition to ordering the arrest, the judge directed that notices be issued to the bail guarantors who had signed for Weerawansa, requiring them to attend the next court hearing. This move underscores the court’s insistence on accountability and adherence to judicial proceedings, ensuring that all parties involved comply with legal obligations.
The case continues to draw attention due to the high-profile nature of the defendant and the significant value of the alleged unlawfully acquired assets. The next hearing is expected to focus on both Weerawansa’s compliance with court orders and the involvement of his bail signatories.
