Pioneering a New Path for Education in Sri Lanka: Yasodhara Pathanjali’s Vision with the Independent Collective School

British-Sri Lankan Educator Leads a Groundbreaking Approach to Learning in a Changing World

Sri Lanka’s first formal democratic school, the Independent Collective School (ICS), is challenging traditional education norms under the leadership of British-Sri Lankan polymath, Yasodhara Pathanjali. At 40, Yasodhara brings a blend of creativity, social activism, coaching, and education, uniquely positioning her to lead this transformative institution. A firm advocate for future-ready education, Yasodhara is steering ICS toward a system that aligns with technological progress and the evolving needs of society.

A Visionary School for Tomorrow’s World

Founded to fill a critical gap in education, ICS serves students aged 2 to 18 years, offering a personalized Cambridge curriculum through a project-based approach. It’s the first school of its kind in Sri Lanka, promoting an adaptable and practical educational model to prepare students for an AI-driven world. The school fosters a unique, interactive learning environment, empowering students to take ownership of their education and pursue real-world applications of their studies.

Yasodhara shares the motivation behind ICS: “We are at a pivotal moment in history. Advances in technology and artificial intelligence mean our way of life and work are shifting faster than we can imagine. Yet, many educational systems are stuck in the past, preparing students for a world that no longer exists. ICS was created as a future-oriented solution, aimed at nurturing the skills and adaptability that young people will need to thrive.”

An Innovative, Project-Based Approach

At ICS, education extends beyond textbooks and standardized tests. The school uses a project-based curriculum that engages students in meaningful work that sharpens their critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Yasodhara emphasizes the importance of this approach, particularly in a world dominated by rapid advancements in AI and digitalization. The diverse, talented team at ICS includes educators and mentors from various backgrounds, bringing fresh perspectives and expertise to the students’ experience.

“One of the most impactful moments came when an eight-year-old student approached me with well-articulated feedback on our recent projects,” Yasodhara recalls. “She explained why she didn’t find them engaging and offered thoughtful suggestions for improvement. To see a young student confidently express her needs and ideas shows that we’re doing something right. This is the kind of independent thinking and constructive dialogue that students need for the future.”

Overcoming Challenges in an Unconventional Journey

Remarkably, ICS’s first year has unfolded smoothly, with Yasodhara attributing this success to the school’s strong community support. She shares, “We are incredibly grateful to have supportive parents, a team that understands our mission, and enthusiastic students who are thriving in this environment. It’s been an inspiring start, and I couldn’t have asked for more.”

However, Yasodhara acknowledges the broader challenges facing the education system. Traditional schooling often relies on rigid structures that can restrict students’ growth, stifling creativity and discouraging critical thinking. ICS seeks to counteract these limitations by fostering a learning space that encourages curiosity, open dialogue, and self-confidence.

Advice for Aspiring Change-Makers

Yasodhara’s journey as an educational entrepreneur offers valuable insights for young people embarking on their own ventures. “Work can be found easily, but finding meaning, fulfilment, and passion is harder,” she notes. “Sri Lanka is a vibrant landscape for innovation, and I encourage young entrepreneurs to dig deep, connect with like-minded people, and stay determined. Material achievements may come and go, but the drive to create lasting, positive change is what truly matters.”

She reminds aspiring entrepreneurs of the importance of resilience and community. “As Sri Lankans, we have a responsibility to support each other and uplift our nation. It’s our hard work, enthusiasm, and innovative spirit that will make Sri Lanka proud.”

Community Support Fuels Success

ICS’s journey has been buoyed by an outpouring of community support. “We’ve had many people volunteer their time and expertise because they believe in the potential of our mission. Parents, too, have shown enthusiasm and positivity, recognizing that ICS offers an alternative to the traditional education system,” says Yasodhara.

Reflecting on the conventional system, Yasodhara adds, “We see children discouraged for asking too many questions, bright students boxed in by a one-size-fits-all approach, and bullying from teachers and peers alike. ICS was created to provide an alternative—a place where every student’s individuality is valued, and their diverse skills are nurtured. I feel fortunate to be a part of this change and wish we could do even more.”

Building the Foundation for Future Leaders

As ICS continues its groundbreaking work, Yasodhara envisions a growing impact on Sri Lanka’s educational landscape. By promoting critical thinking, adaptability, and a love for learning, ICS is preparing young minds to thrive in an unpredictable future. The school’s mission goes beyond academics, aiming to develop well-rounded, socially conscious individuals ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

ICS’s story is a testament to what’s possible when passionate individuals commit to change. With Yasodhara’s visionary leadership and the dedication of her team, the Independent Collective School stands as a beacon of hope for an education system aligned with the future.
