Peter Dutton has officially announced his retirement from politics after suffering a historic defeat in the federal election. The former opposition leader was ousted from his Brisbane seat by Labor’s Ali France — making him the first Liberal leader in Australian history to lose his own seat.
Arriving in Canberra, Dutton thanked supporters for their kind messages and stated he would now “make a graceful exit” and remain respectfully silent about future leadership decisions.
“I accept full responsibility,” Dutton had said in his concession speech, acknowledging the Coalition’s poor campaign performance.
As the Liberal Party begins to regroup, speculation swirls around possible new leaders, with Sussan Ley and Angus Taylor among the top contenders.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese celebrated his resounding victory with a relaxed post-election stroll alongside his dog, Toto.
