A Perth couple with 32 years between them have opened up about the realities of being in an age gap relationship.
When Scarlett, 24, started talking to Scott, 56, online back in 2019, she never imagined that he would end up being the love of her life.
The young woman explained to news.com.au she was in a bad mental health space at the time and felt a pang of loneliness, prompting her to look for friendship on a “sugar daddy” website.
That is when she sparked up a conversation with FIFO worker Scott, who shared he was experiencing the same type of feelings of isolation.
What started as a friendship quickly blossomed into a romance after they realised how much they had in common and how easily their conversations flowed.
Fast forward four years, the pair are now happier than ever in a committed relationship and say despite their 32 year age gap, it is the best connection either of them have experienced.
“My experience of dating younger guys was often a bit ‘wham, bam, thankyou’ but often left me feeling empty,” Scarlett, a housewife, explained.
“They did not have the patience to help me and often only focused on their needs.
“I honestly never thought of dating someone so much older. Initially it was really exciting pushing the boundaries and taboos, but the way Scott treated me made me feel so special.
“I appreciated that he had the patience to listen to me and wanted to help me grow. The love for each other just seemed to blossom naturally.”
Scott, who has been through three divorces in the past, has children who are older than Scarlett and initially felt a bit unsure about being attracted to someone so much younger.
However, he soon realised that life was too short to worry what others thought, and added how the pair had helped each other through different mental struggles over the years.
“We’ve had a few instances where people have mistaken Scarlett for being my daughter,” he explained.
“We do get funny looks when we’re out in public sometimes, but we don’t care.
“We met on a sugar baby/sugar daddy website, as we were both at pretty low points in our lives. We had both experienced toxic relationships and were looking for something different.
“But once we matched and met, money had nothing to do with it. It’s never been financial for us.
“It’s all about love, support and mentoring. We both had some sort of mental health issue at the start, and we’ve helped each other through it.”
While some have assumed that the pair do not have much in common due to their age gap, it is actually quite the opposite.
Scarlett, born in 1999, and Scott, born in 1967, love to get outdoors together with their “fur babies” and say they both always wanted the “traditional” lifestyle.
“We have the same values,” he said.
“We both want the traditional lifestyle, where the man is the provider and the wife stays home and looks beautiful, and takes care of the children, in our case it’s our fur babies.”
“At the end of the day, age is just a number,” Scarlett added.
“As long as I’m happy, and he’s happy, and we’re both two consenting adults, it should not matter what our ages are.
“We work hard to make our relationship work. Scott showed me what unconditional love and respect is and showed me that I mattered.
“I’ve never felt so special.”
The pair have taken to TikTok to share the story of their love, while also raising awareness about mental health and the struggles that can arise with that.
They hope by sharing their journey that they can break down the negativity and stigma that can be attached to age gap relationships and help others who might be struggling feel less alone.
“I hope we can just make someone’s day better,” Scarlett said.
“How we found each other might not be your typical love story, but for us it has been a complete fairytale.
“Love doesn’t discriminate. We’re both happier than we’ve ever been and can’t wait to see what the future brings.”
