Pathum Nissanka Makes History with Record-Breaking ODI Double Century

Pathum Nissanka, the Sri Lankan opener, etched his name in cricket history books by smashing a remarkable double century in a One Day International (ODI) match against Afghanistan.

Nissanka’s unbeaten innings of 210 runs off just 139 balls during the first ODI against Afghanistan in Pallekele catapulted him to become the first Sri Lankan player to achieve this feat in ODIs. His sensational knock, comprising 20 fours and eight sixes, propelled Sri Lanka to a formidable total of 381/3.

This monumental achievement places Nissanka’s name among the elite ranks of ODI cricket, making him the fifth player ever to score a double century while carrying the bat through the innings. Furthermore, his score stands as the highest individual total for Sri Lanka in ODI history, surpassing the previous record held by Sanath Jayasuriya.

Former Sri Lankan captain, Sanath Jayasuriya, took to social media to extend his congratulations to Nissanka, praising his masterful batting performance.

Nissanka’s double century, achieved in just 136 balls, also ranks as the third-fastest in ODI history, surpassing notable cricketing legends such as Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar.

This historic innings cements Nissanka’s place among the top scorers in ODI cricket, joining the ranks of Rohit Sharma, Martin Guptill, and other illustrious names in the sport.

In addition to Nissanka’s remarkable feat, his partnership with Avishka Fernando, resulting in a 182-run stand, played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s commanding performance in the match.

Nissanka’s awe-inspiring display of power-hitting and record-breaking innings marks a momentous occasion in Sri Lankan cricket history, capturing the attention and admiration of cricket fans worldwide.
