The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made cinematic history by introducing a new Oscar category—Best Stunt Design. In a proud moment for Indian cinema, SS Rajamouli’s RRR, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, was spotlighted in the announcement, highlighting its global impact on action filmmaking.
Director SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster film RRR, featuring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has once again drawn international attention, this time from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. As the Oscars officially announce a brand-new category—Best Stunt Design—RRR was given a prominent mention for its groundbreaking action sequences.
The Academy confirmed that the new award will debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, recognising films released in 2027. The announcement was made on Instagram, accompanied by a visual poster featuring three iconic action films: Everything Everywhere All at Once, Mission Impossible, and India’s own RRR. The poster was emblazoned with the words “Stunt Design Oscar,” signifying a new era of appreciation for action choreography in cinema.
Celebrating the recognition, the official RRR social media account responded with enthusiasm: “THE PROUDEST MOMENT FOR ALL OF US. So glad the world continues to celebrate #RRRMOVIE and its ACTION… Again and again and again.”
This is not RRR’s first brush with Oscar glory. In 2023, the film created history by becoming the first Indian film to win an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for the electrifying track Naatu Naatu. The song also clinched the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards, and the film earned admiration from Hollywood heavyweights like the Russo Brothers, Edgar Wright, and James Gunn.
The idea for a Stunt Design Oscar was championed by director-producer David Leitch, known for his work on Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy. Backed by the stunt community, Leitch’s initiative was praised by Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang, who acknowledged stunt work as a long-overdue art form worthy of recognition.
“The creative and technical brilliance of stunt artists has been crucial to filmmaking since the earliest days of cinema. We are honoured to finally give them the platform they deserve,” Kramer and Yang stated.
The first rules and guidelines for the Best Stunt Design award will be announced in 2027, with details about the voting process and eligibility criteria to follow.
Historically, only two stunt professionals have received honorary Oscars—Yakima Canutt in 1966 and Hal Needham in 2012. This new category marks a turning point, bringing stunt professionals into the competitive fold.
David Leitch reflected on the momentous achievement, stating, “This has been a long journey. Chris O’Hara and I worked for years, building on the efforts of generations of stunt artists. We’re incredibly grateful to the Academy.”
The announcement comes after the Academy introduced another new category—Achievement in Casting—in 2024, which will debut at the 98th Academy Awards for 2025 releases.
With RRR continuing to make waves globally, this recognition underscores the film’s legacy as a game-changer in action cinema—and a proud moment for Indian filmmaking.
