Exciting Perth sprinter Oscar’s Fortune is making the permanent move east after he tackles Saturday week’s G1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville for trainer, Dion Luciani.
Adelaide’s premier sprint event shapes as having an influential Western Australian slant with glamour mare Amelia’s Jewel set to race in the $1 million showpiece.
Oscar’s Fortune, who has never finished outside the first three in nine career starts and Amelia’s Jewel, are set to clash for the third time in as many weeks.
Oscar’s Fortune snatched bragging rights in the Roma Cup (1100m) before finishing third to Overpass and Amelia’s Jewel last-start in the Quokka (1200m).
Oscar’s Fortune will have his second attempt at Group 1 honours after a gallant second to Overpass in last December’s Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.
“I was humming and harring and then the handicapper said I’m only going to give you 53.5kg,” Loloma Farm owner-breeder, Kevin Fowler said to The Races WA.
“So, we get a 3kg pull on Amelia’s Jewel and I thought let’s go and have a throw at the stumps.
“After the Roma Cup Dion and I had spoken as to what we were thinking of doing moving forward.
“We put things in place and after the Quokka we decided to push the button and go.”
Fowler confirmed champion Perth rider William Pike will continue his association with Oscar’s Fortune.
Pike has ridden Oscar’s Fortune in eight of nine career starts and in all of the gelding’s five career wins.
Fowler isn’t sure if Oscar’s Fortune will race in Perth again, but says Luciani will continue his link with the three-year-old in Melbourne.
“I will probably leave him in Melbourne, but we’re working a plan that he stays under Dion’s care,” Fowler said.
“He may come back for the Winterbottom and Quokka and things like that, but at this stage my plan is to leave him in Melbourne.
“Dion and I have been through thick and thin and I want the horse to stay with, Dion.
“After his spell there are million dollar races he can go in over there.
“I think he has the ability to win one one of them these days.”
