The 2024 Presidential Poll witnessed a unique situation by the end of September, where only one independent candidate had declared their campaign finances. This contrasts with the major political parties, which had yet to submit their financial reports. Strikingly, nine of the 21 days granted for expense declarations had already elapsed, with the deadline set for October 12th to avoid legal action under the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act.
This marks the first time the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act is being applied in this election. The law is a crucial measure aimed at enhancing transparency and fairness in the electoral process. Mandated by the law, candidates and their parties must report both income and expenditures within 21 days of the election. Despite frequent reminders from the Election Commission, only one candidate has complied with this requirement so far.
This lack of compliance among major political parties raises concerns about the transparency of their campaign finances. The Election Commission’s repeated reminders seem to have had little effect on these parties, leaving voters wondering if there are hidden agendas at play. In a democratic system, transparency is crucial to maintain public trust and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
In light of this situation, it becomes imperative for the Election Commission to take stern action against parties that fail to comply with the law. The Commission must ensure that all candidates are held accountable for their financial declarations, regardless of their political affiliation. Failure to do so may undermine the integrity of the electoral process and erode public trust in the political system.
