ODI Rankings: Sri Lanka Slip to Sixth After England Series Defeat

Sri Lanka has dropped to sixth place in the latest ICC One Day International (ODI) team rankings after losing the three-match series 1-2 to England in Colombo.

England sealed the series with a victory in the final ODI, marking their first ODI series win away from home since 2023. The English innings was highlighted by commanding centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook. Root anchored the innings after early wickets fell, reaching his 20th ODI century at a run-a-ball pace, while Brook accelerated from his half-century to a rapid 136 not out off 66 deliveries, including 34 runs in the final two overs, setting Sri Lanka a challenging target of 358.

Sri Lanka began their chase aggressively, posting 48 runs in the first five overs. However, early wickets, including Pathum Nissanka’s 50 and Kusal Mendis’ quick 20, gave England the advantage. Pavan Rathnayake’s maiden ODI century kept Sri Lanka in contention, but the hosts were bowled out for 304, handing England the series win.

The consecutive defeats in the second and third ODIs caused Sri Lanka to slip one place in the rankings, now level with South Africa on 98 rating points.

England, meanwhile, strengthened their position in the table, widening the gap to the West Indies to 11 points, a margin that could help secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. India remains at the top of the rankings with 119 points.
