Not RRR, Not Baahubali: This Aamir Khan Film Is India’s Biggest Blockbuster Ever

Aamir Khan’s Dangal continues to reign supreme as the highest-grossing Indian film of all time, crossing an unprecedented ₹2,000 crore worldwide.

While films like RRR and Baahubali are often celebrated as India’s biggest cinematic spectacles, the title of the highest-grossing Indian film belongs to a different blockbuster altogether. Released in 2016, Aamir Khan’s Dangal remains unmatched at the box office, with worldwide earnings exceeding ₹2,070 crore, according to industry trackers.

Despite the recent box-office success of Dhurandhar, which entered the ₹1,000 crore club in 2025 alongside heavyweights like RRR and Baahubali, none have managed to surpass the record set by Dangal. The film not only dominated Indian theatres but also rewrote global box-office history, particularly in China.

How Dangal Became India’s Biggest Film

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal tells the inspiring real-life story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters. While the film collected an impressive ₹387 crore in India, its true box-office miracle happened overseas. Released in China in 2017 under the title Shuai Jiao Baba, the film earned over ₹1,000 crore in that market alone, becoming China’s highest-grossing foreign film at the time.

Aamir Khan’s massive popularity in China, coupled with the film’s emotional storytelling and strong social message, played a key role in its extraordinary success. Strategic promotions, a high-profile China tour, and positive word-of-mouth helped Dangal outperform even major Hollywood franchises during its run.

India’s ₹1,000 Crore Club

Although Dangal holds the top spot, several Indian films have crossed the ₹1,000 crore milestone:

Dangal – ₹2,070 crore

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – ₹1,788 crore

Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 – ₹1,742 crore

RRR – ₹1,230 crore

KGF: Chapter 2 – ₹1,215 crore

Jawan & Pathaan (combined) – ₹2,300+ crore

Kalki 2898 AD – ₹1,042 crore

Notably, only three films in the top tier are Bollywood productions, highlighting the growing dominance of regional cinema on the global stage.

Nearly a decade after its release, Dangal remains a cultural milestone—proof that powerful storytelling can transcend language, borders, and box-office trends.
