Nine people have been killed in a rare mass shooting at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, with authorities calling it one of Canada’s deadliest violent incidents in recent years.
A suspected shooter killed nine people in a rare act of mass violence in the remote Canadian town of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia. Police responded to an active shooting incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where six victims were found dead. Authorities also discovered a person believed to be the shooter, who died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
Three injured victims were airlifted to hospital, but one died during transit. Around 25 others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police later found two additional victims dead at a nearby residence, which they believe is connected to the school shooting.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was devastated by the tragedy and expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while praising the courage of first responders. His office confirmed that his schedule for the following day had been suspended.
British Columbia Premier David Eby described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy” and urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger stated that Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers arrived within two minutes of the emergency call, highlighting that their rapid response helped save lives.
Police have not released the identities of the victims or the suspect, though local media reported that the suspect may have been a woman. Authorities are continuing searches of additional properties for potential victims and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Mass shootings are rare in Canada, and this incident is among the deadliest since 2020, when a gunman killed 22 people in Nova Scotia. Tumbler Ridge is a small, remote town with a population of about 2,500, located in northeastern British Columbia.
