New Report Calls for Overhaul of Australia’s Overseas Skills Recognition System

A newly formed working group, ‘Activate Australia’s Skills,’ has released a report urging the Australian government to introduce four critical changes to the system of recognizing overseas qualifications. The aim is to streamline the process and address key barriers, ultimately improving the integration of skilled migrants into the Australian workforce.

According to the report, highlighted by journalist Achol Arok, the current system is in need of an update to better align with Australia’s growing skills demands. The group argues that this will lead to a stronger and more diverse economy.

The report recommends four key changes to the qualification recognition system:

1. Simplify the Assessment Process: The group suggests streamlining the assessment process for overseas qualifications, reducing the bureaucratic hurdles faced by skilled migrants. This will enable them to contribute to the Australian economy sooner.
2. Increase Recognition of Informal and On-the-Job Training: The report emphasizes the importance of recognizing informal and on-the-job training, which is common in many countries. This will help migrants who have gained skills through hands-on experience to be recognized and valued in the Australian workforce.
3. Enhance Digital Capabilities: To improve the efficiency and accuracy of the qualification recognition process, the group recommends investing in digital solutions, such as an online recognition platform. This will enable faster and more reliable recognition of overseas qualifications.
4. Develop a More ‘People-Centered’ Approach: The report advises taking a more holistic approach to qualification recognition, considering factors beyond just the qualifications themselves. This includes recognizing the skills, experience, and education of skilled migrants, as well as their career ambitions and goals.

The ‘Activate Australia’s Skills’ working group, comprising experts from various fields, has presented these recommendations to the Australian government and industry leaders. The group hopes that its report will serve as a catalyst for change, ultimately leading to a more streamlined and effective qualification recognition system in Australia.

With the report’s release, the debate around the recognition of overseas qualifications in Australia has gained momentum. As the country grapples with the challenges of attracting and retaining top talent, the need for a more efficient and effective qualification recognition system has become increasingly evident.
