National Digital Motor Insurance Cards Introduced in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka officially unveiled its National Digital Motor Insurance Cards yesterday at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, signaling a move away from traditional plastic insurance cards.

The launch was overseen by Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala and organized by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL) in collaboration with its partner insurance companies. As part of the rollout, the IRCSL and participating insurers donated 500 tablet computers to the Police Department, enabling officers to verify digital insurance information directly in the field during traffic checks.

The new digital cards allow motorists to access their insurance details securely via smartphones, anytime and anywhere, enhancing convenience and accessibility for policyholders. This innovation not only modernizes the motor insurance process but also strengthens the efficiency of law enforcement during on-road inspections.

The introduction of digital insurance cards is part of Sri Lanka’s broader push towards a digital economy, offering a safer, faster, and more reliable system for both the public and authorities. This initiative is expected to deliver multiple national benefits, including improved service delivery, streamlined verification processes, and a significant reduction in paper-based administration.
