Australia’s top performing NAPLAN schools have been revealed with the 2023 testing results released today.
An independent analysis of newly-released 2023 NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests.
To determine how each school performed in 2023, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Yr 5 or Yr 9) were combined and the average found.

Bragging rights for superior spelling and marvellous mathematics should be shared equally between public and private schools, according to analysis of the 2023 NAPLAN exams undertaken by The Daily Telegraph.
A full list of every primary school’s Year 5 results from the reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy tests held in March reveals the 100 highest scorers are split evenly between both sectors.
Government schools in every corner of the city accounted for 14 of the top 20: while inner-city, expensive all-boys school Sydney Grammar achieved the highest overall average score of 638, Concord West Public School snuck in just behind it with an average of 613.8.
Low-fee independent schools like Northcross Christian School also eclipsed pricey private schools like Abbotsleigh, which charges junior students three times as much in tuition fees.
Meanwhile in secondary education, girls’ schools have markedly lifted their rankings and outperformed several elite boys’ schools in the latest Year 9 NAPLAN data released today.
While coeducational selective public school James Ruse Agricultural High came first – with a NAPLAN average score of 747.2 – three selective public girls’ only schools took out the next three spots – Sydney Girls High, Hornsby Girls and North Sydney Girls.

Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Melbourne High School are Victoria’s best schools for NAPLAN results, the Herald Sun can reveal.
The release of the 2023 school-level NAPLAN results shows selective schools and private colleges are the top performers at both primary and secondary levels.
It’s the first time NAPLAN schoolwide results have been published in the same year the test was conducted, but changes to the test timing and measurement method mean results are not directly comparable to previous years.
The ’ results, which dip to below 500 at a number of state schools schools, come as nearly one in three Victorian students – or about 300,000 pupils – are failing to meet national standards in English and maths.
Despite the excellent results of the best schools, gaps between the highest and lowest performing schools are wider than they have ever been – more than 200 points for both primary and secondary sectors.
PLC, a private girls’ school in Burwood, leads the pack for primary results, with an average of 613 points for year five reading, writing, numeracy, grammar and spelling.
Second overall for primary schools is Eltham College (602), followed by Ballarat Clarendon College (593), Ballarat Christian College (589), St Andrew’s Christian College (588) and Huntingtower School (586). The highest ranked state primary school is Wheelers Hill with an average score of 580, followed by Bentleigh West (574), Oakleigh South (568) and Doncaster Gardens (567).
Melbourne High is the leading secondary school, with a year nine average of 704, followed by the state’s three other selective state campuses, MacRobertson Girls’ (700), Nossal High (687) and Suzanne Cory High (684).
They are followed by a range of leading private schools, with the next ranked state high school coming in at number 29, Glen Waverley Secondary College.

This year’s NAPLAN results show metropolitan state schools going toe-to-toe with Queensland’s prestigious private colleges, but experts say the academic divide for disadvantaged students has never been greater.
The comprehensive school-by-school test data, released on Friday, comes amid slow progress in government negotiations to redesign the national school funding model and right the imbalances that have led to chronic underfunding of the nation’s state schools.
There were 10 government schools, all bar one from Brisbane, ranked in the top 20 primary schools but in stark contrast, only four Brisbane schools finished in the bottom 100.

Students from Lucindale to Mt Barker and Whyalla have achieved NAPLAN test results propelling their schools into the best-performing across the state.
Analysis of year 5 and year 9 literacy and numeracy skills at every South Australian school has revealed big improvements for smaller sites and ongoing success for the state’s largest campuses.
Among the most-improved in 2023 was Lucindale Area School, which has fewer than 200 students.
It ranked 17th out of the top 20 schools for year 5 results – a meteoric rise from 419th last year.
Among year 9 students, Whyalla’s Sunrise Christian School, with about 250 students, ranked 6th – surging from 72nd last year.
And Mount Barker Waldorf School, with about 340 students, rose through the ranks, from 56th year 9 results in 2022 to 17th this year.
Results for every public, Catholic and independent school have been released publicly online today by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
Glenunga International High School, the state’s largest public school, remained in top spot among secondary schools, followed by St John’s Grammar in Belair and Heritage College in Oakden.
Among primary students, independent St Andrew’s School inched higher from fourth spot in 2022 to become the state’s best performing primary school, ahead of St Peter’s Collegiate Girls’ School in Stonyfell and Dara School in Morphettville.

Haileybury Rendall School and The Essington School were the top performing NAPLAN 2023 schools in the Territory.
HRS was the highest performing NT primary school with an average score of 522.4.
TES outperformed the Territory’s secondary schools with an average score of 623.6.
It is the second year in a row that both schools have topped their respective NAPLAN rankings
