Embark on a journey through the illustrious career of Nalin Perera, a revered figure in Sri Lankan music whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry for more than thirty years. From his humble beginnings in Chilaw to becoming the driving force behind Marians, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic bands, Nalin’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and musical excellence.
Born on October 15, 1969, Mahabaduge Nalin Anjelo Perera’s musical journey commenced during his formative years at St. Mary’s College, Chilaw. Inspired by the legendary Sunil Perera of the Gypsies, Nalin’s fascination with music took root early on. His talent and dedication caught the attention of his peers, and in 1985, he joined Nightingales as a vocalist. However, it was in 1988, with the founding of Marians, that Nalin truly began to etch his name into the annals of Sri Lankan music history.
With the support of his school principal, Rev. Bro. Alosious, Nalin spearheaded the formation of Marians, a band that would soon captivate audiences across the nation. Their inaugural concert at the Sudasuna auditorium on February 11, 1988, marked the genesis of a musical journey that would span decades and transcend boundaries.
Throughout the 1990s, Marians’ popularity skyrocketed, thanks to their distinctive sound and electrifying performances. Collaborations with renowned local bands like the Gypsies and Sunflowers further cemented their status as trailblazers in the Sri Lankan music scene. Nalin’s multifaceted talents extended beyond music, as he charmed audiences on television screens and silver screens alike, hosting “Kageda Gee Nada” and starring in the Sinhala movie “Eka Malaka Pethi.”
Under Nalin’s visionary leadership, Marians released their debut album, “Marians Sangeetha Naade Vol. 1,” in 1989, laying the foundation for a string of successful albums and international tours. Their unwavering commitment to musical innovation was evident with the launch of their own recording studio in Chilaw in 1997 and the introduction of groundbreaking unplugged concerts in the mid-2000s.
As Marians celebrated milestones such as their 20th and 30th anniversaries with unforgettable concerts, Nalin continued to push the boundaries of creativity and excellence. From introducing state-of-the-art sound systems like the JBL Line Array to establishing cutting-edge recording facilities, Marians’ legacy of musical excellence remains unparalleled.
