The 100-foot billboard, situated opposite a fuel station in the Ghatkopar area, succumbed to the storm’s ferocity, crashing onto the fuel station below with devastating force.
CCTV footage captured the dramatic collapse, showing the metal structure tearing through car roofs before hitting the ground. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has dispatched two teams to aid in the search and rescue operations, working alongside the Mumbai Fire Brigade and other agencies.
The hoarding, erected by Ego Media on a plot leased to the Police Welfare Corporation by the Maharashtra government’s Police Housing Division, is one of four hoardings on the premises. Despite having permissions from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Railways), Ego Media lacked authorisation from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), leading to a notice demanding the cancellation of all permissions granted by the Railways.
The storm, which brought Mumbai to a standstill, also caused significant disruptions to transport networks, halting local trains and flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport due to low visibility and gusty winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued warnings of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain for Mumbai and surrounding areas.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the collapse site and assured a thorough investigation. He announced a structural audit of all city hoardings, with immediate removal of those deemed illegal and dangerous. The Chief Minister also announced an aid of ₹ 5 lakh to the families of each victim.
