The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) expressed deep appreciation on December 8 for the strong support shown by Australia and Japan toward maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait.
The backing came through a joint statement released after a meeting in Tokyo between Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles and Japanese Minister of Defense Shinjiro Koizumi on December 7. In the statement, the ministers reaffirmed that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are essential to security and prosperity in the region and the world.
They also reiterated their strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion, stressing that cross-strait issues must be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
MOFA responded by highlighting China’s continued military expansion and provocative actions in the East China Sea, South China Sea and the Pacific. The ministry cited the recent incident in which Chinese fighter jets locked radar on Japanese Air Self-Defense Force aircraft as an example of actions that threaten regional security.
The ministry stressed that it would continue monitoring the regional situation closely and urged China to stop any destabilizing activities that could heighten tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
MOFA emphasized that Taiwan remains committed to strengthening its self-defense capabilities and whole-of-society resilience. It added that Taiwan will continue working closely with democratic partners to uphold a rules-based international order and maintain peace, prosperity and stability across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the Indo-Pacific.
