Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath has proposed that China support the establishment of an islandwide electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Sri Lanka through a donation, in line with the government’s plans to expand the import of electric vehicles, including those from China.
The Minister noted that such infrastructure would be vital as Sri Lanka prepares to introduce a greater number of electric buses and promote cleaner transportation nationwide. He made these remarks during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (29).
Ambassador Qi Zhenhong responded positively to the proposal and assured that he would convey the request to the Chinese government for further consideration.
During the meeting, Minister Herath also sought urgent Chinese assistance for the reconstruction of railway lines and bridges damaged by the ongoing floods. The Ambassador agreed to immediately bring the matter to the attention of the Chinese authorities.
Additionally, Ambassador Qi stated that he intends to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Ditva and explore possible areas of support with the Chinese government, covering all essential sectors.
