The United Kingdom and the United States have long shared a partnership that transcends diplomacy, and Microsoft is now strengthening that alliance with a historic investment in the UK. On the eve of President Donald Trump’s state visit, Microsoft announced a $30 billion investment in AI infrastructure and operations across the UK from 2025 to 2028, marking the largest financial commitment the company has ever made in the country.
The plan includes $15 billion in capital expenditures to build out the UK’s cloud and AI infrastructure, including the nation’s largest supercomputer, featuring over 23,000 NVIDIA GPUs, in partnership with Nscale. The investment will expand Microsoft’s datacenter footprint and support growing AI adoption across sectors such as finance, healthcare, energy, and technology.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the announcement, describing it as a “powerful vote of confidence in UK’s leadership in AI and cutting-edge technology,” emphasizing that the investment will create thousands of highly skilled jobs and reinforce Britain’s global innovation standing.
Microsoft’s remaining investment will support its ongoing operations in the UK, including its 6,000-strong workforce across multiple cities. Employees contribute to AI research, model development, datacenter operations, and product innovation, working closely with key institutions such as Barclays, the NHS, the London Stock Exchange Group, Vodafone, and Unilever.
The announcement also underscores the UK-US Technology Partnership and reflects a broader goal of fostering long-term transatlantic cooperation in AI, digital infrastructure, and responsible technology deployment. Microsoft has already trained over one million people in AI skills in the UK, bolstering workforce readiness for the future.
This massive investment signals a new era of collaboration between British institutions and trusted American technology, aiming to drive innovation, economic growth, and global leadership in AI for both nations.
