Melloney Dassanayaka, a 25-year-old banker and professional model from Colombo, has been crowned Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2024. The highly anticipated national pageant took place on Friday, September 27 at Citrus Waskaduwa, where Melloney emerged victorious among 18 contestants vying for the prestigious title. She will now represent Sri Lanka at the Miss Universe 2024 competition, set to be held in Mexico this November.
Melloney, known for her grace and poise, also claimed two mini titles during the competition: Best Catwalk and Most Elegant in Evening Dress, further cementing her position as a frontrunner. The event marked the triumphant return of Sri Lanka to the Miss Universe pageant after a five-year hiatus, with the country’s last appearance in 2018 when Ornella Gunesekere represented Sri Lanka and won the Miss Congeniality award in Bangkok, Thailand.
Under the leadership of Nirmal Bandara, the new national director, this year’s pageant featured a refreshed and dynamic approach. Bandara’s vision for the competition sought to showcase Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and modern sophistication, emphasizing the significance of the nation’s reentry into the international arena.
In addition to Melloney’s win, several other contestants were recognized for their exceptional performances. Sonali Silva was named first runner-up, followed by Prathibha Liyanaarachchi, Reshalee de Silva, and Chamanthi Bandara as the second, third, and fourth runners-up, respectively.
As Sri Lanka gears up for its return to Miss Universe, Melloney’s victory brings fresh hope for a strong performance on the world stage. With her combination of intelligence, charm, and elegance, she is poised to make an impact in Mexico, inspiring a new generation of young Sri Lankan women to pursue their dreams.
