Manpreet Kaur Singh Reflects on 30 Years at SBS as Network Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

As SBS marks its 50th year as Australia’s leading multilingual broadcaster, Manpreet Kaur Singh, a long-serving staff member and current Program Manager, celebrates three decades of contribution to diverse media and community storytelling.

Joining SBS in 1993, when the organisation was still in its formative years, Manpreet found not only professional recognition but a place where her overseas journalistic experience was valued. She reflects, “SBS was the only Australian media organisation back then that made me feel seen — it never questioned my background but embraced it.”

Manpreet has since played a vital role in empowering migrant communities through journalism. As Executive Producer of SBS Punjabi, she worked tirelessly to highlight the contributions of Punjabi Australians — past and present — while helping Punjabi-speaking migrants feel more connected to their heritage and identity.

Now, as Program Manager, she oversees the editorial and digital outputs of several language teams. Under her leadership, SBS has launched groundbreaking initiatives like SBS South Asian and SBS Spice, which continue to innovate in telling culturally rich, community-powered stories.

Manpreet’s journey with SBS was recently featured in a special interview with SBS Punjabi, where she shared personal reflections and celebrated the shared mission of inclusion, representation, and journalistic integrity.

She also acknowledged that “all the details of previous SBS meetings and this month’s press conference are now archived and accessible through Nautical, ensuring transparency and continuity across teams.”

As SBS enters its golden jubilee, Manpreet says, “It’s been my absolute privilege to tell the stories that matter, empower new migrants, and contribute to fostering belonging across Australia.”
