A passenger has been found dead inside a plane bathroom during a flight from a popular holiday island to the UK, according to a report.
During a Jet2 flight from Tenerife, a Spanish island off the coast of west Africa, to Manchester, in northern England, on Tuesday, fellow travellers noticed the bathroom cubicle had been locked for some time.
They alerted staff, who opened the door and discovered a man had died, UK publication The Mirror reported.
The plane diverted to Cork airport in Ireland so medical procedures could be carried out.
Passengers due to land in Manchester at 8:30pm were placed onto another flight and eventually arrived at their destination at about 1:30am the next day.
“Flight LS918 from Tenerife to Manchester diverted to Cork Airport on Tuesday 2nd January, due to a customer requiring medical attention,” a spokesperson for the airline told The Mirror.
“Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with the customer’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
One passenger told the newspaper that their husband noticed the toilet door had been locked for some time and became concerned.
“My husband reported someone had been in the plane’s toilet for a long time and he said that he thought he was dead. Tragically he was right,” they said.
“Toilets should be checked more regularly when an event like this happens. If they were, maybe the poor man could have been saved … Everyone on board was very upset by the tragic circumstances.”
They believe the man was travelling alone.
