A man allegedly fired a speargun at police, leading to a 13-hour lockdown of a Cairns suburb.

Police were called to a property in Bungalow St, Bungalow about 10am on Good Friday following reports of a disturbance.

“Police will allege when they attempted to engage the man, they were threatened with a spear gun which was fired at officers,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“Officers contained the unit and negotiators were called in.”

An emergency situation was declared just after 12pm, with boundaries encompassing Little Spence Street, Buchan Street, Kidston Street and Hartley Street.

The emergency situation was revoked at 2.17am on Saturday.

No-one was injured.

A 46-year-old Bungalow man is assisting police with inquiries.

Investigations are continuing.

The PSPA was the second in Cairns in two days.

On Thursday, police locked down part of the leafy suburb of Edge Hill after a man was shot in the street following a collision between two vehicles.

One driver allegedly fired shots at the other, before running off.

Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said on Thursday it’s likely the people involved knew each other. The man who was shot was driven away by a woman who was also in the black Audi at the time.

“We’re working towards a theory, it’s most likely people who know each other,” Detective Chetham said.

“It’s certainly not road rage.”

The shooting triggered a mass lockdown, with police declaring an exclusion zone including Little Spence Street, Buchan Street, Kidston Street and Hartley Street.

The lockdown was called off at 3.45pm, but residents were still advised to stay indoors.

The occupants of the black Audi were found later, but the alleged gunman was still at large.
